Ulmus × hollandica 'Eleganto-Variegata'

U. × hollandica 'Eleganto-Variegata' is one of a number of cultivars arising from the crossing of the Wych Elm U. glabra with a variety of Field Elm U. minor. First mentioned by Miller [2] in Gard. Dict. ed. 6. Ulmus no. 9, 1752, as U. major Hollandica, angustis & magis acuminatis sammaris, folio latissimo scabro, eleganter variegato ^[1].

Description

The tree was described as the Dutch Elm with striped leaves.

Cultivation

Probably extinct beyond Brighton.

Accessions

• Brighton & Hove City Council, UK, NCCPG elm collection [3]. One tree in Stanford Avenue had striped variegation on the lower branch leaves until 2009; this tree is grafted at 1.5m.
